Fruit and vegetables can make us happier

Eating fruit and vegetables can help improve our mental health, according to a new study.

Researchers at The University of Warwick came to this conclusion by studying the diets and mental well-being of 80,000 Brits.

According to warwick.ac.uk, the group found a strong correlation between the amount of fruit and vegetables their sample group consumed and their overall well-being.

Happiness levels peaked among those who consumed seven 80g portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Many of the researchers were surprised at the size of the impact that fruit and vegetables had on a positive mind. Reacting to the results, the study's co-author, Professor Andrew Oswald said: "This study has shown surprising results and I have decided it is prudent to eat more fruit and vegetables. I am keen to stay cheery."

The British government recommends consuming five portions of fruit and vegetables a day in order to stay in peak physical health, yet this study suggests that eating more could make us mentally healthier.

Sciencenewsline.com reports that only one in ten Britons consume seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day. In fact, a quarter eat less than two portions on an average day.

The research is due to be published in the 'Social Indicators Research' journal.
