Just 30 minutes of exercise can keep dementia away, says study

A new study has found that exercising for just thirty minutes, three times a week, can keep dementia at bay, reports.

The data, collected by researchers at the University of Lisbon, found that the exercise even benefited those over 60 years old. The study was conducted over three years, with cognitive assessments undertaken each year.

Researchers of the study, which was published in the American Heart Association journal 'Stoke', said that it was 'never too late' for people to join a fitness club or start up a regular exercise routine.

Ana Verdelho, lead author of the study, told "We strongly suggest physical activity of moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes, three times a week, to prevent cognitive impairment. This is particularly important for people with vascular risk factors such as hypertension, stroke or diabetes."

It is reported that 820,000 people suffer from dementia in the UK. It sees sufferers experience a serious loss of cognitive ability ahead of normal ageing. It can be brought on by damage or disease to the body and usually results in a long-term decline.

The research is the latest study which has concluded that regular exercise is beneficial to brain health.

Dr. Simon Ridley, Head of Research at Alzheimer's Research UK, said that the study provided more support that keeping the cardiovascular system healthy can reduce the risk of dementia.
